Placement and storage of the eye wash bottles
In the event of eye injuries caused by foreign bodies or contact with acids or alkalis, the eye must be rinsed as quickly as possible. The eye wash bottle and the emergency wall boxes should therefore by placed as close as possible to potential hazards at the workplace. After use, replace the eye wash bottle immediately with a new one. Always keep sufficient quantities of eye wash bottles available as one of your first aid measures.

After eye contamination, foreign bodies in the eyes or eye injuries a doctor should always be consulted after initial first aid.

Accidents involving foreign bodies in the eyes

The eye wash solution with a sterile 0.9 % sodium chloride solution (0.9 % saline solution) is used to rinse out foreign bodies from the eyes.

With mechanical injuries, caused by metal and wood splinters, dirt and dust, time is an important factor. In these cases instant rinsing can prevent foreign bodies becoming stuck in the eyes and causing severe damage.
In such cases the eye wash solution with a sterile 0.9 % saline solution / sodium chloride solution is the correct choice.

Eye accidents involving acids and alkaline substances

The eye wash solution with a sterile, pH-neutral (4.9 %) phosphate buffer solution is used for neutralising acids, alkalis and many alkaline substances. When such accidents occur, burning starts the moment the substance comes into contact with the eyes. For this type of injury, we recommend using an eye wash solution with a sterile, pH-neutral (4.9 %) phosphate buffer solution.

Recommended use of pH-neutral eye wash solution

pH-neutral rinsing solution is intended as a first aid measure for emergency rinsing with a duration of 2 minutes. The aim of rinsing with a pH-neutral bottle is to attain a harmless pH value as quickly as possible if acids or alkalis have come into contact with the eyes. To continue rinsing on the way to a doctor, use of an eye wash solution with a 0.9 % sodium chloride solution is recommended.
