Swivel castors and fixed castors: follow your nose!

We don't have to explain how much easier operational logistics become with wheels and castors. That is why we prefer to explain to you when and why you should place your trust in swivel castors and fixed castors from our product range.

What defines a swivel castor?

Each swivel castor consists of a wheel in a housing to which a specific type of fastener is attached. As soon as a housing like this is used, the castor can, theoretically, move in all directions.

So it simply responds to a directional impulse and moves transport equipment and trolleys around corners and curves. To make manoeuvring easier and device handling safer, many castors have either a stop that only blocks the direction of rotation of the wheel. Or they have a double stop that also blocks the swivel bearing.

What constitutes a fixed castor?

A fixed castor is, accordingly, a wheel in a housing with an attachment that does not rotate. This means that these rollers can only move straight ahead – but they do so particularly unerringly and quickly.

How can swivel castors and fixed castors be combined?

Basically, it is always the best idea to make use of the benefits of both variants in one device. Then they can make headway on straight stretches with great track holding properties and still take all curves and obstacles with little force required. The combination of two swivel castors with two fixed castors is therefore also the most common version. However, four swivel castors are ideal when you need to manoeuvre in the tightest of spaces, such as moving serving trolleys through narrow office corridors or assembly trolleys around many workstations.

Theoretically, four fixed castors (or swivel castors with wheel stops) could move ahead particularly smoothly and hold their track on defined paths. In reality, however, nobody uses this variant.

With our range of castors made by Proroll, Wicke and Tente, you will definitely find the ideal combination for you.

Which material should I choose for swivel castors or fixed castors?

The different tyre and castor materials allow you to optimally adapt the fixed and swivel castors to the respective task, the load bearing capacity and the environmental factors:

  • Grey cast iron makes the most of its advantages as a robust and wear-resistant material in heavy duty, uninterrupted use. Although it is noisy and not as gentle on floors, it requires very little maintenance.

  • Thermoplastic rubber elastomers run smoothly with low rolling resistance and cause no track marks on the floor.

  • Polyurethane in general is suitable for sensitive, even floors and can carry high loads. It resists chemical environmental influences and is characterised by a very smooth run.

  • Polyamide and nylon are shock and impact resistant with low rolling resistance. They become a modern alternative to steel that is shatterproof and temperature resistant. They are therefore suitable for heavy duty castors, especially in frosty environments, but roll away loudly.

  • Solid rubber is used for swivel castors on uneven floors particularly often. It is quiet, manoeuvrable and inexpensive. Grey solid rubber tyres are non-marking and do not leave streaks on floors.

You can find more about the most important details when making a selection in the purchasing guide to wheels and castors.

How do I select the appropriate castors?

Each product page offers you many configuration options for your choice of castor. As always, we determine the optimal combination of properties for you as soon as you have clicked on the main factor that determines your selection. In doing so, please observe the following:

  1. Design: Practically every model is available as a fixed or swivel castor, with or without a stop. If you click on this in the product finder on the category page, our shop automatically puts together the right selection of products.

  2. Wheel bearings: Depending on the model, you can choose between plain, roller and ball bearings. Plain bearings are recommended for use in wet areas, otherwise we recommend the other two models.

  3. Load capacity/weight: Use the formula weight of the transport device + load / 3. The factor 3 ensures that the castors hold the weight, even when all four rollers are not always in contact with the floor.

Should you have any further questions, we will be happy to answer them personally.
