Heavy duty wheels for every application

Whenever something needs to be moved or transported, wheels are required. With a wide variety of styles and functions, choosing heavy duty wheels for your business can be a challenge. Luckily, we have something for everyone – handy when you're looking for replacement or spare wheels for your furniture, equipment or devices.

What are the different types of wheels?

There are many different types of wheels to choose from, including:

Trolley wheels

Without appropriate wheels, your trolley won’t function properly and will prove difficult to cart around. When shopping for trolley wheels, it’s important to consider diameter, tread type, bearing type, and load capacity. You’ll also need to think about where your trolley wheels will be used, such as ground type, temperature, humidity, and vibration absorption.

Castors

Wheels are more basic when compared to castors; they consist only of a round object and can only roll in one direction at a time. On the other hand, castors are more complex, incorporating a wheel in their design, with a metal frame, which allows them to be used in conjunction with other objects.

Heavy duty wheels

If you’re looking for heavy duty wheels that provide strength, durability, and manoeuvrability, then certain materials are better suited, such as iron. These types of wheels are designed to withstand heavy loads and applications – the best choice if you need to move heavy items or loads on refuse bins and skips.

Rubber wheels

Often regarded as the safest material, rubber doesn’t slide on smooth or wet surfaces and tends to last longer. As a result, rubber wheels are very popular and feel very smooth to push, working well at any temperature.

Nylon wheels

Strong and hard wearing with excellent wear and tear resistance, nylon wheels can support heavy loads without fracture. Despite these great qualities, they are relatively inexpensive when compared to wheels made with other materials.

Polyurethane (PU) wheels

Offering the same elasticity of rubber wheels, with the toughness and durability of metal wheels, PU wheels are a fantastic option for transportation wheels and industrial equipment, with low rolling resistance and good grip. Being resistant to oils, solvents, and chemicals also makes PU wheels ideal for use in harsh working environments.

Solid wheels

Solid rubber wheels are one of the most popular. They are smooth, quiet, relatively adaptable and inexpensive, although strength is limited. Two-component solid rubber wheels, however, are smoother, but still have a lower rolling resistance.

Cast iron wheels

Grey cast iron wheels are the first choice when it comes to demanding use, as they are virtually maintenance-free and robust. However, these wheels are not designed for floor protection or smooth running.

Trolley wheels or castors: what's the difference?

The key difference between trolley wheels and castors is the design; castors are an assembly consisting of a wheel and housing, with a specific fastening device. On the other hand, wheels are attached directly to an axle.

Although they are different, trolley wheels and castors are designed to serve the same purpose, making transport equipment and trolleys much easier, safer, and more convenient to operate.

Trolley wheels achieve this through the interplay of four essential factors:

Tyres or covering made of a suitable material for certain floors and working environments.

Rims made of a specific material to optimise the load bearing capacity or maximum load.

Diameter and wheel width, suitable for the respective transport device.

Design and quality of the ball, roller or plain bearing.

Depending on the combination of these factors, the trolley wheels and castors in our product have a variety of advantages, including:

Low rolling resistance

Non marking and abrasion-free use on almost all floors

Low material wear

High load bearing capacity with small size

Further details on floor conditions and the specific suitability of the wheels are always available on the relevant product pages.

Which materials for trolley wheels are most useful for everyday operations?

The materials our trolley wheels and castors are made of help to determine the running properties and comfort of your equipment. Different materials serve various purposes. Some are more hard wearing than others. Some offer a smoother glide than others. Which trolley wheels you require will depend on your working environment and what you actually need them for. If you need help deciding, check out our buying guide for trolley wheels and castors for helpful advice.

Changing trolley wheels

Any employee can change trolley wheels safely and easily, without training, as long as there are no safety regulations that apply for a transport device or trolley. Installation and assembly of wheels is self-explanatory. However, it’s important to test the functionality of the device once the wheels have been replaced before use.
