    Drum heaters: for a perfect work climate



    Even though engine oil, for example, doesn’t freeze, and the properties of paints or varnishes don’t change as soon as temperatures drop, you should always make sure they are used at the correct temperature. When the calendar says winter, drum heaters will ensure an optimum work climate in all weather conditions.



    What are drum heaters and heating jackets needed for?



    Drum heaters for industrial and commercial use are not, in principle, any different to an electric blanket used at home: they provide a uniform source of heat straight from the power socket. While we snuggle up on top of an electric blanket at home for more comfort, the main focus when using them with drums is the viscosity of the media they contain.



    If the ambient temperatures fall below a certain level, media such as lubricants stop flowing properly, paints and varnishes can no longer be applied correctly, and blended substances separate into different phases.



    Heating collars for drums, canisters and tanks don’t just warm up the containers and their contents. They ensure that the temperature remains stable and therefore help maintain all key properties. This not only applies to liquids. Heating jackets also enable a steady flow of gas when used for gas cylinder handling.



    What do I need to pay attention to when using a drum heater?



    • The temperatures that a drum heating jacket can actually reach depend on many factors. The role played by the ambient temperature is just as significant as the material that the container is made of, its contents etc.

    • Checking the temperature resistance of the applicable container is every bit as important as checking which regulations apply to handling hazardous goods and storing hazardous goods. Drum heaters must also fulfil these requirements. One of the decisive factors in this context is their suitability for use in ATEX zones.

    • The ability to be controlled steplessly using a thermostat is preferable to other methods of heating. This allows you to use the drum heater for a wide variety of media and heating up processes.

    • The heating collars are designed for specific container types (or dimensions). They can be adapted to the shape using belts, but should still only be used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

    • Powerful drum collars warm up the containers within a very short time and therefore have them ready for use more quickly. However, this is not necessary in all environments or for all media.


    Before working with the media that have been heated up, always remember to take a sample and check its suitability for use, its viscosity etc. Wear protective clothing and ensure correct leakage management measures.
