Absorbent granulate: simply absorb any hazards

In an emergency, a rapid response is all important. Absorbent granulates not only absorb hazardous liquids, they also retain them and ensure fast disposal. This makes them the first choice for company safety and protecting the environment in the event of an incident.

What are absorbent granulates?

Just like absorbent sheeting, absorbent granulates are one of the absorbent agents that form an elementary component of leakage management. Both products absorb spilled liquids, use adhesion to embed them in their structure and thereby facilitate disposal.

Absorbent granulates absorb oils and chemicals, varnishes or paints, resins or any other liquid that is relevant to hazardous goods handling. To prevent the actual granulate from contaminating water or soil, most absorbent granulates are made of mineral clay, cork, pumice or other natural raw materials that do not represent a problem.

Absorbent granulate or absorbent sheeting: which is used when?

As a fabric underlay, absorbent sheeting is suitable for all jobs during which hazardous liquids could spill. Granulates, on the other hand, are used when a substance has already leaked. They are therefore key emergency equipment and a component of many spillage emergency kits.

While absorbent sheeting can also collect oil from the surface of water without any problems, chemical absorbent granulate for sprinkling onto leaks is, first and foremost, a specialist for all types of floors. Porous, permeable or uneven surfaces in particular are better off with absorbent granulate, as the granules can work their way into small recesses or grooves, and do their job there. A typical example of use is soaking up spilled motor oil or petrol on asphalt.

If you would like to combine the best features of both types, absorbent socks and absorbent cushions as sheets filled with granulate are the way to go.

Which absorbent granulate is suitable for which use?

A universal absorbent granulate is exactly that: a universal emergency product suitable for the most common liquids, for outdoor and indoor use, and for most sealed surfaces. Universal granulates can absorb oil, lubricants and fuels, as well as numerous chemicals – including aggressive acids.

When it comes to use as a chemical absorbent agent, many all-purpose absorbent granulates are also suitable for this, however products tested by DEKRA and issued with the corresponding certificates are particularly practical. The same applies to absorbing biodiesels and other oils. The Requirements for absorbent agents for oil (1998) published by the Federal Environment Agency provide further, detailed information. Using this as a basis, when making your choice, pay attention to the following:

  • Yield: depending on the material, leakage and composition of the granulate, one bag of absorbent agent can absorb different quantities of liquid. Thick or highly viscous substances require more granulate than runnier substances to ensure safe and complete absorption.

  • Suitability: absorbent granulates for oil are classified according to type. Type I is particularly suitable for use on bodies of water, type II is approved for short term use on small bodies of water as well as on land, while type III stands for special cases on solid ground. The designation ''R'' indicates sufficient grip on the road surface after removal of the granulate.
